The Rabbi Who Flew

The Rabbi Who Flew

The Rabbi Who Flew
A Grandma Hanne Sheyne Story

by
Renate Dollinger

Rabbi Frum prayed so passionately that he flew, but the shoemaker noticed holes in the rabbi's shoes as he went overhead. What would everyone think of their "holy" rabbi? What would they think about the shoemaker. The shoemaker and his son took care of the rabbi in the best spirit of mitzvah, respect, and a lesson in love.

A Grandma Hanne Sheyne Story

Do you know the Rabbi's secret?

Praised by reviewers

“The Rabbi Who Flew is a tale of faith and love and the correctness of things. It is told in simple language, with Hebrew words explained and enlightened with amazing paintings that are rive with detail, color and the sheer joy of art.”

Dan Hays—Salem Statesman Journal

“With a playful magic realism incorporating the work of Singer and Chagall, Grandma tells a story of a rabbi in the shtetl who is so holy that he flies… Best of all are Dollinger's vibrant expressionist paintings in rich gouache colors, highlighted with thick black lines. They are packed with people and action, and whether the setting is the street, the crowded shul, or the shoemaker's Shabbat dinner table, the pictures capture the magic that is part of daily life.”

Hazel Rochman—Booklist

“A closer look at the expressive color artwork and rapturous tale reveals why this children's story deserves such an honor… ‘The Rabbi Who Flew’ is charmingly presented, exciting, and a highly enjoyable story for young people, presented in such a way as to evoke an atmosphere of Jewish folklore.”

The Midwest Book Review

“If one could find a way to hang a children's book on the wall like fine art, Northwest artist Renate Dollinger's new book for children would find its way onto a living-room wall.”

Donna Gordon Blankenship—The Jewish Transcript

Rabbi Frum flying

Loved by kids of all ages

“I really like ‘The Rabbi Who Flew,’ because I like the pictures, and I liked it because the Rabbi Frum prayed so deeply that he could fly. I liked the shoemaker, because he cared about the Rabbi and his son Moshe sneaked to Rabbi's house to get the shoes with the holes and return it all done and fixed. I read it to my mom and grandma and they liked it too.”

Lauren O'Neil — 8 years old

“I was fascinated by the title ‘The Rabbi Who Flew.’ I thought it was a child's fantasy, but I was curious enough to read the story. It was so enchanting that I read the story once, had a good laugh, and read it again. I highly recommend it to the curious mothers, fathers, and grandparents of all ages.”

Dr. Herman Pepper — 92 years old

“It has been a pleasure for us to carry and sell Renate Dollinger's children's picture book ‘The Rabbi Who Flew.’ The story is charming and recreates the feeling of a time and place that no longer exist. Renate's whimsical illustrations are especially delightful… We hope she will publish another book soon!”

About the author and illustrator

Born in a small town in the Silesian Alps in Germany, Dollinger managed to escape to London in 1939. As a refugee, she attended Reiman School of Art and the London Polytechnic Institute. She joined the British Land Army and Royal Timber Corps and chopped down eighteen trees a day (and she is only 5' 3"). In 1945 she joined the U.S. 3rd Army under Patton to help open the newly liberated concentration camps. In 1947 she joined her surviving sister in California. There she married, raised a family of four children, and began a 47-year painting career that has brought universal acclaim.

Renate Dollinger

“Renate Dollinger is a vibrant and happy soul; it shines through and should make her future work in children's literature as appealing as this book is. I look forward to seeing another book soon.”

Rita Berman Frischer, writer, reviewer, lecturer;
Director of Library Services, Sinai Temple, L.A. (1980-2000), ret.

Scheindel and the Fireflies—The next Grandma Hanne Sheyne Story

Scheindel, a little dreamer of 8 years old, loved fireflies. She played with them constantly. One day, while the whole town of Gil was busy rebuilding the temple after it burned down, Scheindel wandered into the woods looking for more fireflies. Nobody could find her, not even Rabbi Frum as he flew over the town. Everyone was very worried because they were afraid that Scheindel would be hurt by the dangerous animals in the forest. Help came from an unexpected source.
